When a missile siren stopped work yesterday at the farm where we were volunteering everyone, regular farmworkers and volunteers, piled into the shelter and the regional Leket farm volunteer coordinator took out his guitar and started a musical singalong Tehillim (Psalms). People joined in, religious, secular, Jew and non-Jew, whether they knew the words or just hummed along. That spirit was a distillation of how we live with the constant existential threat hovering over our everyday lives. No matter how good (and they are incredibly good) our anti-missile defenses, we still know that our enemies have some pretty huge and destructive arsenals aimed at our population centres, and worse that Iran's leadership and IRGC, Hizballah and others are consumed by the hatred required to use these weapons against us. So it's not that we aren't aware that there is a risk of one of these terror weapons hitting, it's that we have faith in the dedication of those protecting us. We will not be cowed, this is our home, our heritage, we are determined to live in the best way that we can. Our ancient ancestor, King David, had a life filled with trouble, with enemies out to get him, but he found time and inspiration to write the sublime poetry of Psalms, to find strength in song, to appreciate the good around him even in the darkest of situations.
